Oak Bathroom Vanity Care – Quick Tips to keep your Vanity looking new

Renovating a bathroom and furnishing it with new vanity units isn’t exactly the cheapest of home improvement tasks, and not something that you want to do every year. Which means, when you do make such an investment, you’ll want to take extra special care of your vanity units to keep them looking as new, for as long as possible.

And whilst every well-made bathroom vanity unit is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the average bathroom, over time, unless they are properly cared for, they will start to look a little worn and weathered.

But, fear not! Because, there are 7 simple tips that you can follow to keep your vanity in pristine condition and looking as new for longer. Here’s what you need to know:

1 – Vanities are water resistant (not water proof)

It is important to remember that a bathroom vanity unit is water resistant. And whilst that may suggest: resistant to water, it doesn’t mean completely impervious to its effects over time.

The fact is, when exposed to humid air and a small amount of moisture, your vanity should be fine. However, when water is left standing on the vanity itself, just as any normal piece of wood furniture would, it will leave water spots and stains and in some cases (if you are really careless with it), it may begin to warp.

2 – Clean up any spillages right away

In the bathroom, make sure that you clean up any spillages on your vanity immediately. If you want to protect your finish and keep it looking as new for longer, then you must keep it dry. Again, just because it is resistant to water, it doesn’t mean that you can submerge it in the bathtub without repercussion!

3 – Dust it and give it a good polishing

As part of your routine cleaning process, dust and wipe your vanity unit. Simply grab a soft, dry cloth and remove all dust and loose hair. Following that, apply some wood polish and rub it in gently in the direction of the grain.

With consistent maintenance, you will also prevent dirt from penetrating the vanity (wood is relatively porous after all, and prone to staining).

4 – Avoid harsh chemicals

Just as you should be mindful of what chemicals you put on your skin, you should pay similar mind to that of your vanity unit. Sure, a well-made vanity is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the bathroom, however, using the sort of chemicals that you’d use to clean your toilet with will eat right through the vanity’s finish and ultimately do it far more harm than good.

5 – Take extra care with your stone top vanity

It’s easy to forget that a stone top vanity unit isn’t completely resistant to any and all damage. Remember, materials like marble and granite and porous in nature, which makes them prone to staining, and damage by exposure to harsh chemicals. As such, you should take extra care and be gentle with your stone top vanity unit.

Take this cream marble top vanity unit as an example; absolutely stunning. However, without the proper care and maintenance, this can soon stain and fall into disrepair.

When it comes to caring for a vanity unit, a little goes a long way.

6 – Clean regularly and re-seal annually

By this point it might all sound like an awful lot of work, but it really isn’t. The main thing is that you clean up any water spillages right away before it soaks into the stone. A quick once over after every use is enough to keep it looking pristine. Then, you can give it a thorough clean weekly or fortnightly, whilst re-sealing the varnish once a year for extra protection.

7 – Think ahead

Plan where you will be placing your vanity before you go ahead and make a purchase. Location is everything. Having a vanity in direct sunlight for example, is a sure way of having it age prematurely.

Fortunately, at Bathrooms & More Store, we have a wide variety of vanities in all shapes, sizes, and materials, so you’ll be certain to find the perfect optimisation for your unique bathroom layout.

And there it is; if you follow these tips your vanity will remain pristine for longer. Yes, it does require a bit of effort, but if you get into the habit of wiping the vanity after use, it will soon be second nature.

That, coupled with some routine maintenance and an annual varnish, and you’ll be able to enjoy your beloved vanity units for years to come!
