Break The Rules

When it comes to interior design, rules are more of a loose guideline than something to be strictly adhered to. Breaking the rules of colour, in particular, can conjure drama into a room.

Colourful Room

Today on the blog we take a look at some the rules that you should break from time to time.

80:20

20:80 Living Room

This ratio is the percentage of colour usage in a room: 80% neutral and 20% colour. It’s a simple formula to follow when trying to decide how much colour should go into a space. However, if you switch the figures round to 20:80, it can create a room packed full of colour.

Punchy Pickings

Light Blue Dining Room

When considering a colour, many people think saturated hues will give them the best results. As much as a brighter or deeper shade might look good, opting for a lighter colour, like this light blue can be better. It’s just more casual and calm.

Common Colour

Cohesive Rooms

As much as making your space cohesive is good advice, ignoring it can be just as effective. Flow a common colour from one room to the next and use it to define rooms.

Neutral Means Beige

Sage Bedroom

This perception is wrong. Neutral colours are any that contain a balance of warm and cool tones. Beige is one but not the only one. Investigating more neutral colours can make a room more sophisticated, layered and beautiful.

Dominant Themes

Red and Green Study

Sure, red and green may suggest a certain winter holiday, but colours dedicated to one day in December doesn’t mean you can’t use them any other time. Used correctly, the most recognisable combinations can look fresh and unique.

Use storage compartments to house remote controls, magazines, and other small items. Regularly curating and clearing the tabletop can also help maintain a tidy look.

A round or oval tray can add contrast and help break up the lines, while a rectangular or square tray can maintain a consistent geometry.

Choose coffee tables with hidden storage or use decorative boxes and trays that complement the room’s decor.
